Hatha Yoga is the physical practise of body postures and breathing techniques known in Sanskrit as asana and pranayama. Regular practice of Hatha Yoga asanas will increase both your strength and flexibility. Your muscles will gradually begin to release tension and tightness. As your muscles relax, you will experience a reduction in tension and mental stress. Another benefit of yoga practice is that you become more in touch with your breathing. Yoga poses are practiced in harmony with the breath. When one breathes easily throughout the day, less tensions accumulate within the body.
One of the most important things you can learn from a yoga class is that your thoughts have the ability to affect your overall contentment and health. During the deep relaxation pose (savasana), one systematically relaxes every part of the body, even suggesting that the mind itself is "relaxed." During relaxation we are able to let the thoughts flow through us without dancing away with them to the past or the future. We remain conscious, allowing the thoughts to come through us, but we learn not to interact with them. Then we can let go of that thought and return to the relaxation at hand.
The Yoga instructors at The Davisville Club are all trained and fully certified by leading authorities in Yoga.

Pilates is a blend of Western and Eastern methods of exercise that combine strengthening and stretching exercises emphasizing strength of the abdominals, lower back and glutes, along with body symmetry and control. Through the mat-work exercises, from the essential level and moving to the challenging advanced levels, pilates provides incredible benefits including: strong, lean, flexible muscles without adding bulk; improved posture and body awareness; improved coordination and balance; increased flexibility; and relief of pain and tension; all of which leaves you feeling invigorated and in control of your body with a renewed sense of well-being.
Pilates has been in existence for 80 years, pioneered by Joseph Pilates who trained a lifetime in yoga, boxing, Zen meditation, martial arts, and gymnastics. After WWI, he began developing his technique while working with injured soldiers to create what pilates is today, a system that includes over 500 exercises on the mat and various pieces of equipment. People of all ages and physical conditions from the elite athlete, to the Hollywood star, to people rehabilitating from injuries or using it as injury prevention, can benefit from pilates. It is the workout that everyone is talking about.
